The “little balls” you’re seeing are called pills. They form when loose micro-fibers (common with soft, brushed fleece interiors and cotton/poly blends) get rubbed to the surface and tangle from friction—in a washer, against towels/denim, seatbelts, backpack straps, etc. It’s cosmetic (not a fabric failure), but it’s frustrating and we want to help.
How to prevent pilling going forward
- Wash inside-out, cold, on a gentle cycle with similar smooth garments (avoid towels/jeans).
- Use liquid detergent; avoid bleach and skip fabric softener (it can leave residue and affect prints).
- Don’t overload the washer; more room = less abrasion.
- Air dry or tumble low; high heat can rough up fibers.
- For extra protection, use a mesh laundry bag for hoodies.
Quick fix if it’s already pilled
- Use a fabric shaver/depiller or sweater stone—it safely removes pills in a minute or two and restores a smooth face.
